In WWII, advanced technology and weapons were the difference between victory and defeat. Modern tanks, battleships and aircraft were competing for superiority in a massive global conflict. It was this drive for better weapon tech that initiated the development of nuclear weapons.
Dubbed “The Manhattan Project” research and development of these weapons was lead by the united states with support from the UK and Canada. Nuclear physicist Robert Oppenheimer was the laboratory director who headed up the design and development of the worlds first nuclear bomb. The Manhattan Project was expensive work costing around 2 billion dollars at the time.
The first ever nuclear test was conducted on the 16th of July 1945 in new Mexico
