Remember, Remember, The 5th Of November, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot! Every year in the UK on the 5th of November, the Gunpowder Plot and Guy Fawkes night commemorates the failed plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament and half of London. Guy Fawkes is remembered as the man who wished to end the monarchy and the government, as at the time Catholics were being persecuted across the nation. Inside the Houses of Parliament in a Cellar, 36 barrels of gunpowder were stockpiled, and the intention was to ignite them on the State Opening of Parliament.
However hours before the Gunpowder Plot would have happened, James I the King ordered an inspection of the cellars. There he found Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder, and with this Fawkes was arrested and thrown in the Tower of London. He was tortured and he named the other conspirators who were brought to trial and were then executed being hanged, drawn and quartered.
