Today the Palace of Westminster serves as a meeting place for the House of Commons and the House of Lords, but in the 19th century there was a huge fire there that destroyed large parts of the building. The fire was devastating and was the most severe since the Great Fire of London of 1666. The fire lasted most of the evening on the 16th October 1834 when it broke out, and many people flocked to watch the palace engulfed in flames.
