Traitors' Gate - The TERRIFYING Entrance To The Tower Of London
During the Tudor period, the Tower of London became a site of torture, execution and imprisonment. It was where two of Henry VIII's Queens would lose their heads inside of the walls, with Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard being executed. But there was a terrifying and horrific entrance to the Tower known as Traitors' Gate in which many prisoners accused of treason were taken into the Tower that way. They would pass up the River Thames, and would then be taken under the heads of those executed before them on Tower Hill, and this would strike fear into their hearts.
As they disembarked their barge, they would then be led up some stairs and be a prisoner of the world's most brutal and historic prison. The Tower of London changed from a royal residence to a royal prison during Henry VIII's reign, and Sir Thomas More and many other famous prisoners went under Traitors' Gate. But it was never intended to be an entrance for high value prisoners, but instead it was just meant to be a water gate allowing the King and Queen privacy when they came to the Tower to stay.
