During the Great Patriotic War, the Brest Fortress was the first to bear the brunt of enemy attacks. The subsequent heroic defense of the Brest Fortress, although it had no significant impact on the course of the war, nevertheless became one of the greatest military feats of the war. After the war, the Brest Fortress was awarded the title "Hero Fortress," and a large memorial complex was established on the ruins of the fortress. Today, the "Brest Fortress - Hero" memorial complex includes several large monuments, many smaller monuments, a stele, a museum, a former garrison church, an exhibition of World War II military equipment, surviving fragments of buildings, and other defensive fortifications of the fortress itself. Other tourist attractions are also located here, such as a restaurant and souvenir shops.
