If you are planning to use Google Ads then you absolutely have to set up conversion tracking or else you might as well not even start.
Google Ads is so competitive these days that every percentage Point counts. If you are spending $10,000 per month then even a 10% swing can really start to add up.
Conversion tracking is fairly simple to set up, however most people neglect it. Go into the conversion section of your account to follow along.
The best and easiest way is by just installing Google tag manager on your site to start with. If you have tag manager than the rest of your life will be so much easier. It is as easy to install as just trying to do the Google ads pixel once, and it will be able to manage all of your tags in far less clicks with far greater reliability.
Create a new conversion and follow the process that I use in the video. Make sure to have the conversion no to know if you have an account running that is currently using smart bidding on that set of conversions. Make sure you are always aware because it can cause your account to go Haywire. Different attribution models will provide you with different outlooks on each campaign success. I don't I want to go too much into attribution here, but the thing you need to understand is that most brands should not use last click. Last click just does not give you a holistic view of what is happening in your account. People initially discover your brand through some type of generic search, they may see a YouTube or display ad, then go back to Google to perform some other random searches, and then after seeing your brand multiple times they finally type it into the Google search bar and click on your ad and convert. That person would have never thought to have Googled your name if they would not have interacted with your ads previously. Failure to give all campaigns that interact with the user credit will be failure to leverage the true power of Google ads.
If you use Google tag manager to set up conversion tracking then it should begin working immediately. You can always test it using preview mode or tag assistant by Google. This video is not a detailed tutorial of how to do every single thing, but a brief overview of what conversion tracking is and why it's so important.
The last thing you need to know, and maybe the most important, is that all conversions are not created equal, so make sure that you are tracking conversions that have True Value.
For example, lead generation. Leads don’t actually make your business any money, it just costs money. The cost to generate it through ads and then the cost of a sales rep to field the call. Until that lead becomes a customer, you are in the hole. If you optimize Google ads strictly to get the cheapest cost per lead then there is a good possibility you will optimize towards lower quality leads, because low quality leads are typically the cheapest and many other advertisers know that so they are blocking them from their account, which is the reason why you get them.
Hopefully this helps. Always pick conversions that have dollar value to your business. In e-commerce it's easy because there is a check out.
