He lived for just a few hours.
She breathed soft, warm into his mouth,
one first-last kiss before they took him away.
Before he came, her life was a sealed envelope:
she lived in a windowless room
painted herself with fresh faces every day,
drawing curtains on the light in her mind.
Now she finds a moment each day
to stagger to that place
between cries and whispers
where she rests and dries her tears.
She has found her true body,
endless as space and carries
his empty body with her
through the avenues and alleyways
of her waking hours.
