Why do I think that periodization of loads works not only for strength growth, but also for muscle hypertrophy in the long term? I have good reasons to assume that this is so. Firstly, based on various studies of detraining, we can conclude that we do not necessarily need to load the muscles to the maximum constantly to achieve maximum results and adding 3-4 or even 10 weeks of rest between training cycles does not reduce the size of the strength or hypertrophy effect. Secondly, there is a whole systematic review that shows a clear advantage of periodized training programs for strength gains, but does not find the difference in muscle growth to be statistically significant. I can explain this by the fact that periodization brings its effects in the long term and most studies simply do not last long enough to detect such a connection.
