Harpsichord transmutation of Liebestraum No. 3, S.541 No. 3 by Franz Liszt.
Liebestraum No. 3 is the most widely known of Liszt’s three Liebesträume, published in 1850 and derived from earlier song settings. The piece is characterized by a sustained melodic line, broad harmonic spans, and a contemplative central section, standing apart from Liszt’s more overtly virtuosic keyboard works.
Presented here on the harpsichord, the music is approached through clarity of line and structural balance, allowing its lyrical discourse to unfold without reliance on Romantic pianistic resonance.
Bruno Martins is a harpsichordist and contemporary musician based in Paris.
Transmutation is Bruno Martins’s practice of changing a work’s musical body through the harpsichord, not simply transferring its notes.
