Harpsichord transcription of Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Johannes Brahms.
Hungarian Dance No. 5 is one of the most widely recognized pieces from Brahms’s set of Hungarian Dances, first published in 1869. Based on vernacular dance idioms rather than original themes, the work is characterized by sharp rhythmic contrast, abrupt shifts of tempo, and a strong sense of propulsion.
Presented here on the harpsichord, the dance is approached through articulation and rhythmic clarity, allowing its volatile character and structural contrasts to emerge without orchestral or pianistic weight.
