Durango - Silverton Scenic Train Ride
The Drango - Silverton scenic railroad is spectacular. Beginning in Durango, Colorado, board a historic train that winds along the scenic Animas River to Silverton, Colorado. The ride is 3.5 hours one-way, and the return is 3.5 hours. The railway was built in 1881 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway. The train ascends about 3000 feet as it makes its way into Silverton, some 45 miles in distance. The railroad tracks are narrow gauge, allowing tighter turns in the mountainous terrain.
