Arcosanti, Arizona
Arcosanti, Arizona was an experiment to bring nature closer to people and people closer to people. Development began in 1970 and continues to this day. Over 8000 volunteers helped create Arcosanti since its beginning in 1970, a protype micro-city. Workshoppers who came as part of a 5-week workshop lived in modular concrete cubes. The artisans create windbells, carve tiles and other artistic items that are sold in the gallery. A welcoming restaurant provides excellent food. In 1978 the 75-foot swimming pool was completed. Arcosanti sits on a solid bedrock of basalt providing a natural strong foundation for the structures.
The best way to see Arcosanti is through a guided tour. Merely walking the grounds is prohibited. You can also stay in one of their guest facilities and take advantage of everything Arcosanti has to offer, including the spectacular night sky.
