Glazing The Inside
Although the focus of my ceramic pots is the outside surface and form, the inside is also important. In this short video I explain how I create the dark finish that I typically use in my work.
The mix of manganese and copper oxide that I use is mixed with water to create an ink like liquid that I pour into the pots once they have been biscuit fired.
This mix of oxides typically has a metallic bronze finish to it where it’s thick. The ratio of manganese to copper can be varied to make it work at different temperatures, I add a small amount of ball clay to the mix that allows it to be applied more evenly when it’s poured into my pots.
This mix can be quite runny in the kiln; the benefit of putting it on the inside of my pots is that it has nowhere to run except into the bottom of the pot.
