In 2019, I published a Boss Fight Books volume on the making of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and for several years wrote a column on classic Star Wars video games for the official Star Wars blog, covered Star Wars for outlets like Variety and USA Today, and generally spent a lot of time thinking about the franchise. But my favorite part of that whole era was getting the opportunity to interview creatives—artists, developers, producers, voice actors, writers, toymakers—about their unique relationships to the galaxy far, far away. I liked telling the stories of how these things we care so deeply about got made.
At this year’s Game Awards ceremony, Lucasfilm Games and Arcanaut Studios (newly founded in July of 2025) announced Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a “spiritual successor” to one of the best, most influential games that BioWare, the Star Wars camp, and really any RPG studio ever released, especially in the early 2000s. So what is this thing? What might we reasonably expect from Fate of the Old Republic? Let’s talk about it! This game is surely many years off, but it’s a nice surprise, and I can’t wait to hear and see more.
