I’ve had this vlog for a while but updated it based on the comments on my last meme post. Look I’m not out to roast newer Interpreters. That’s not even an interest of mine. But I do feel strongly about education, especially as it speaks to reasonable standards and practices in our field. One I feel strongly about, is this strange feeling of entitlement I come across amongst less experienced Interpreters who feel deserving of higher hourly rates. I don’t really get why it’s a hard concept to grasp as illustrated by the example I use in this vlog .

Education is a gateway. It gives you the tools you need to put into practice on your way to becoming great. But it isn’t an automatic golden ticket. It means you have demonstrated ability in passing all of your courses. The same way in that the passing of the NIC means you have demonstrated a BASIC skill level in understanding ethical competency and interpreting practices. Like we all know Jennifer Lopez was a “fly girl” before she became JLo, right? 🤷🏽♀️. .

Our field of discipline may be different than others, but this commonality remains the same. I mean unless you are Doggie Howser. Cuz if you are, then yes, of course, ignore everything I just said 🥴. Everyone is concerned with earning their worth... but that’s just my very point isn’t it.... You don’t get to charge for your potential. That only works in the NBA. 😏
