OBJECTIVES
 Write numbers in expanded form and then in exponential notation.
 Change numbers given in exponential form to standard form.
 Read and write numbers in proper scientific notation.

LESSON PREREQUISITE
Your knowledge on decimals from Grade 5 will be applied here. This lesson has limited its coverage to positive exponents for the very large
numbers. For the very small numbers with negative exponents, you will need to learn integers first. This will be discussed later this school year. However, if you will be very interested, you may look it up independently, or ask your teacher for some guidance.

LESSON PROPER
Numbers in Expanded Form
Review of exponents: The exponent is the number of times that the base is
multiplied by itself. e.g. 10 6 : read as “ten to the 6th” is 10x10x10x10x10x10

Numbers may be written in exponential form, with the digits’ place value expressed as powers of 10.

10. Millions 10'6
Hundred thousands 10'5
Ten thousands 10'4
Thousands 10'3
Hundreds 10'2
Tens 10'1
Ones 10'0
