 Read numbers from 1 to 1,000.
 Write numbers from 1 to 1,000 in symbols (digits) and in words.

LESSON PREREQUISITE
None.

LESSON PROPER
Reading Numbers

Numbers are read differently if they are used as names or labels.

Examples: Room number 512: “Room number five-one-two”
Flight number 880: “Flight number eight-eight-zero”
Student number 2021-10025:
“Student number twenty-twenty-one, 0ne-zero-zero-two-five” School year 2021-2022:
“School year twenty-twenty-one to twenty-twenty-two”

The digits are read one by one, or by twos, as in “Year twenty-twenty-one”

If they are actually counts of things or are measured values, then they are written and read with the place values.

Examples: The hotel has (512) five hundred twelve rooms.
The plane flew a distance of (880 km) eight hundred eighty kilometers.
She spent a total of (Php 2 021) two thousand twenty-one pesos.

Writing Numbers
Be careful with numbers that sound alike. Be able to hear the differences, and write them out in their correct spellings.

Examples: thirty (30) and thirteen (13)

Five hundred eighteen (518) and five hundred eighty (580)

A dash connects the words for the tens and the ones digit.

Examples: 42: forty-two
78: seventy-eight
359: three hundred fifty-nine

The expanded form shows the values of each digit in the number. Doing the expanded form helps in reading and writing numbers properly.

Examples: 567 = 500 + 60 + 7
five hundred sixty seven or five hundred sixty-seven
712 = 700 + 10 + 2
seven hundred twelve or seven hundred twelve
(not seven hundred ten-two)

903 = 900 + 0 + 3

nine hundred three or nine hundred three
