Paper Power: Unveiling the Ultimate DIY Boombox Creation
Some weeks ago, I embarked on an ambitious project - building a 55-inch wide boombox to scale. Inspired by my love for the 80s and the iconic boombox design, I wanted to create a showstopper that would showcase the diverse opportunities graphic design offers while attracting new students to the field. Little did I know that this endeavor would be filled with unexpected challenges and triumphs. In this blog post, I'll share my experience of constructing the 3-foot-wide boombox and the creative process behind it.

The Spark of Inspiration:
The idea for this project originated from a screensaver on my phone - an 80s-style boombox that captivated me daily. Determined to bring this vision to life, I set out to create my own version of a boombox, an undertaking that required meticulous planning and precise execution.
Crafting the Design:
Unlike my usual process of starting with pencil sketches or digital drafts, I decided to utilize Adobe Illustrator for this geometrically intricate design. Using the Bézier tool (pen tool), I meticulously drew each line, incorporating main cut lines, scoring lines, and even miniature, dotted cut lines for folding purposes. The aim was to strike a balance between delicate details and the sturdiness of the construction.
The Power of Paper:
To construct the boombox, I turned to sturdy 140-pound watercolor paper. This exceptional paper allowed for tear-free sheets, which I placed on the Cricut Maker's sticky mat without any issues. However, I had to calibrate the Cricut Maker for custom materials, increasing the pressure poundage and number of passes for optimal cutting. Experimentation and fine-tuning were necessary to achieve the desired precision without risking misalignment or paper lifting.
Precision and Iteration:
Piece by piece, I meticulously designed and redesigned each component, ensuring the desired level of detail. To add depth and texture, I incorporated additional layers, spray-mounting them on top of the already constructed parts. Gray and black pen details were added to maintain consistency and enhance the overall aesthetics.
From Design to Experience:
A truly immersive experience required more than just a visually stunning boombox. I reached out to my students to record audio that would simulate a radio playing experience. The dial would move, scanning through different channels, while the recorded audio played, showcasing the power of graphic design, digital media, sound design, and video design. This project aimed to demonstrate to students that graphic design is just the beginning and that their skills can lead to diverse design avenues.
