An elevation is a traditional point of view drawn by an architect to show an orthographic view of the front, side, or back of a structure.
In Revit an elevation view plays a very important role in addition to the same function an architect draws an elevation. It is the view that is the easiest view to use to create and manage levels. Levels are not necessarily floors or stories of a building. They are used as reference points for the elevation of a feature of a building. All objects in Revit are referenced to a level before anything else and usually can be adjusted further based on an offset property from the base or top.
You can create levels using the level function, usually in sequence at ten foot intervals. Each new level comes with a 2d plan view. During the design process level markers may continuously be adjusted, or new ones may be added. Often levels are inserted between existing levels to function as an often used middle level reference point. When managing objects, especially walls, make sure they are completely constrained and referenced to level markers.
