India's police fired tear gas and water cannons in the eastern city of Calcutta as clashes with demonstrators protesting against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor turned violent.
Hundreds of people chanted slogans against the August 9 attack and gathered behind police barricades as authorities fired water cannons and tear gas at several junctures in an attempt to disperse the protesters. Dozens of people later tore apart a barricade as anti-riot police wielding long sticks tried to stop them.
The attack on August 9 in the eastern city of Calcutta has triggered demands for justice for the victim and greater safety for women at hospitals, with doctors in several places refusing to see non-emergency patients.
