Today we'll try one of the oldest Trader Vic's Mai Tai recipes and it is directly from the source. The Mai Tai served at the Habana Hilton was a little different than the 1944 Mai Tai and even from the original Hawaiian Mai Tai from 1953. This Mai Tai contained a rhum St. James which may (or may not) have been a sugar cane juice-based rum. The Habana Hilton and the Trader Vic's location did not last long. It was only 9 months before the hotel was nationalized and Fidel Castro even set-up a headquarters in suite 2324. The hotel would be renamed Hotel Havana Libre and today is called Hotel Tryp Habana Libre.
Martinique's Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) was put in place in November of 1996, so in a technical sense, there was no true "Agricole" before that date, and whether the rhum from St James was molasses or sugar cane juice based it would not have been labeled as an Agricole at that time.
It's just another Mai Tai mystery that endures.
