Welcome to Crawl or No Crawl - this is Carolyn Holzman and today is Sept 17 -

Before talking about the current Helpful content update- I wanted to share the latest tests on the Google Indexing API -

Content published using the API looks like its not queuing up to go through the 2nd pass - or render pass - and for those of you using wordpress your site has javascript in it - you should check this out for yourself but any seo contained within JS components of your site and if you are using the API to publish your content - you are likely having trouble on the SEO front cause without that 2nd pass Google is not seeing it.

Also, you’ll see here that even though there isn’t scheduled testing going on the current mobile test site - I am using it to confirm when the InspectionTool crawlers get updated - these crawlers don’t come unless you request indexation via the search console manually - they do not come if you’re using the Google Indexing API -

But search console request for indexation definitely gets the new content through the 2nd or rendering pass -

If you are as a standard procedure using the API - and those pages aren’t performing as well - go ahead and resubmit your sitemap and manually request indexation. If that doesn’t work well, you’ve ruled out the indexation system as the culprit - you problem have an optimization issue.

This week after last week announcing the Core update was over - on Thursday afternoon came the announcement of the Helpful Content System Classifier update was running and would be complete over the next 2 weeks.

Some people have reported gains. And that makes sense -

If you know what helpful content is targeting and I think I do have a pretty good idea - that would indeed look like as described - when they make another pass with the classifier if you have made more “helpful” content you will be rewarded.

Helpful Content is a domain factor - not a page factor in other words its effect is felt site-wide (positive or negative)

What google considers Helpful Content CAN be measured -

Its based to gauge visitor expectations -

But here’s what’s weird of the time of the re-tuning of the classifier portion of the Helpful Content System -

Since announcing it we’ve have 5 crawler agents update their chrome builds - and that means a LOT of testing - and rollback and suppression of data going on .

Meaning you might be seeing pages drop out - and come back - and you didn’t do anything.

Looking at the search console data - specifically the page report updates - and likely search console is still not accurate e- I find pages noted in the crawled not indexed that are noted in the individual URL inspection report as indexed - and can confirm they are also findable by their keywords.

So technically there are ways to verify how truthful that list is on the URLs in those crawled but not indexed lists - life is easier if you don’t expect that data to be 100% accurate.

Please leave comments about what you’re seeing - I may bark but I promise not to bite you!

Indexer Software status - we have it about 60% complete - the remaining 40% is the User Inference - and then you’ll have the ability to sign up for a free account with a set number of credits to give it a try.

OK - stick around for more Indexing API tests -
