Welcome to Crawl or No Crawl - this is Carolyn Holzman and today is Oct 11 - day 7 of the announced core update
Here’s what distinguishes what happens in a core update in the server logs versus what I call the shoulder updates -
IN the past 48 hours I’ve been scouring server logs for every site I have access to - some are highly trafficked some are my crappy little test sites
Without exception - every single one of them shows an increase in
Validation crawls checking https. Www. And trailing slash
Multiple chrome builds in the inspection tools up to last Sunday
Two new chrome build bots - one mobile one desktop introduced within hours on Friday
And lots and lots of refresh full render crawls on pages - and I mean lots.
Sites that haven’t seen the light of day when it comes to new content - like over 14 months - get it?
Full refresh render crawls - each piece of those pages -
And now when you look at this - why the big jump in volatility?
I surmise that they aren’t recrawling and holding - they are probably batching what they rescore - and serving it back out.
While this is going on - do not be surprised if you can not get your new content through to serving. The door between google and our search consoles is a one-way door opening from Google to the index - not the other way around
Just last night we had another page report update in search console - they processed 3 days of content and likely that’s what it will look like for the next 2 to 3 weeks.
Stop your crying - put your attention on other things - call your clients and let them know what’s happening - show them this video because its easier for them to blame you than to learn how google works - so we must apprise them and over the next few days as they see things go nuts and then calm down and then go nuts again n- they will at least have fresh data points that it’s not your failing as an agency or SEO.
Also, I’m branching out and taking in sites that have been hit by updates to provide an audit that either you can get your team to implement or we can implement for you - go to Americanwaymedia.com and use the contact page. Or email [email protected]
This week’s Confessions of an SEO podcast episode I’m going to break down conceptually the tolerance window of your site when it comes to google’s current Algorithm. There are sites that get buffeted by update after update, don’t take action and just stand then until there is nothing left. Not professional SEOs - but people who have historically done their own SEO. If this is you - take a listen.
Quick update - the indexer continues through the initial testing phase. Likely we’re about 4 - 5 weeks out before I will feel good about opening up.
Meanwhile, put y our big girl or boy pants on and focus on things that don’t make you look at search console or rank trackers.
Until then - see you in the serps!
