Welcome to Crawl or No Crawl - this is Carolyn Holzman and today is Oct 16 Monday and we have a lot of ground to cover so I’ll keep this quick- supposedly we are still in a core update but from what I see I think we’re in the search and recovery phase at the end and I’ll show you why I say this.

Last report I shared that Google was in a recrawl phase due to all the pages and sites that I saw - sites with loads of traffic and those that have literally zero - and hadn’t been published on in over a year -

We have to ask ourselves why?
Increase in validation crawls - that’s where a bot will hit both urls checking that https status. Www. And trailing slash

I surmised from just what I know about computer systems that they aren’t recrawling and holding - they are probably batching what they rescore - and serving it back out.

We saw two big jumps in volatility which was likely caused by what we loving refer to as data dumps. Rescored content pushed out

So here’s what happened last week -

1. Two new InspectionTool crawlers to bring it up to the latest tested version of chrome 48
2. A new desktop chrome 48 to create that bookend for the chrome build - mobile first and then topped off at the end with a desktop version of the same build
3. And a NEW mobile chrome -
4. We had back to back search console report data updates - rare occurrence and then a final over over the weekend and now I think we’ll be back on the 3 day schedule on these -

I’ve called these updates before - and what I am seeing is an anatomy of an update - we start with a new chrome build - and they shut down taking in new content or at least hold it back from getting served.

Then they update all the pieces of the crawlers until everything is caught up

Last week the InspectionTool crawlers that have Chrome builds were not the same - one was chrome 45 and others were chrome 46 - and they stair stepped their way to chrome 48 - I don’t log the builds on this sheet I put it over here where I count them.

So that’s why I saw we’re out of the rescoring phase and in the clean up phase where likely if things went as planned to engineers we’ll get an all clear signal

Until then - see you in the serps!
