Human Resources or People Management has now become a boundary-less profession. By this I mean that its scope has expanded enormously. In my view it has always been so, but many realise this and accept this post-pandemic. Preparation for it may come from Psychology, Social Work, Education, HR, Management, Philosophy, Arts, Medicine, Engineering, Design, Science or any other discipline which teaches fundamentals of “human behaviour” in different contexts. Once you choose HR or People Management Profession with appropriate titles, your scope of work is enormous. In organised sector you may deal with themes like community building and health, environment, physical and mental health, work and happiness, quality and productivity, meaning and purpose of life and work, competencies, service, speed, labour laws, recruitment, welfare, discrimination and harassment, self actualisation and self management, learning and development, commitment and citizenship, alignment of goals, target setting, risk taking, resilience, AI, etc. etc. In the categories of people- you deal with employees, employers, investors, financiers,. Boards, owners, regulators, government and other stake holders, teachers, nurses, doctors, technicians, technologists etc. etc. People management is a vast area and no education program by itself can give you all skills. You have learning, skilling and
up-skilling. HR is a life and living profession. Every one who desires to be in it should learn to set new boundaries by his or her own interests and opportunities. In today’s world you create your own opportunities. It is easy to choose a job for which tasks and task patterns have been already set. Value addition to world comes from those who delve into new areas and new target groups of people. Happy International HR Day!
