I was looking for a convenient process to put away dry dishes by nighttime to have a cleared dish rack by morning before starting another chaotic day with family members pilling more wet dishes.
This project leverages a SmartThings ZigBee Door/Window Sensor with a built-in vibration circuit to detect dishes placed on the dish rack. The drying apparatus comprise of multiple USB cross-flow fans (originally laptop coolers) stacked together to blow air at room temperature. These fans are connected to a smart outlet and triggered upon sensing vibration. I also placed a rechargeable button switch for manual operation. Adding more smart functionalities, the fans can also be controlled via Alexa voice assistance and a SmartThings routine that turns off automatically after a few hours as well as ignores vibration triggers after midnight to preserve a quiet nighttime.
Altogether, my drying time reduced by four times on average allowing the dishes to stored away within a couple of hours. No more wet dishes piling up excessively!
Note: I completed this project a couple of years ago before the start of this YouTube channel, so I have limited photos and footage for this video. I hope it still inspires other DIY’ers to try it out.
