In the winter of 2018, on the banks of the Yalu River in Hyesan, North Hamgyong Province,
35-year-old Han Seol-hee gazed at the river and made her final decision.
She was a legendary smuggler, having crossed the Yalu River over 50 times.
Her life of smuggling began at the age of fifteen.
Crossing frozen rivers, avoiding guard patrols,
she risked her life to feed her family.
But this time was different. She had helped hundreds of North Korean defectors cross the river, yet remained unable to leave herself.
When her family was taken to a political prison camp, she was forced to make her own choice for the first time.
Why did the woman who knew the river best remain unmoved until the very end?
And why was crossing the river for the 51st time so terrifying?
Now, let's begin that story.
