What causes frost to form on a freezer evaporator or how to check the defrost sensor yourself. I'll say right away that many people make the mistake of checking the sensor on their refrigerator and assuming it's working properly. The fact is, any sensor can be easily tested—if it's a thermostat-type sensor, you can simply place it in the refrigerator and remove it after a few minutes. After this procedure, all contacts should be closed. This is where the trick lies. An inexperienced technician or ordinary person immediately jumps to conclusions about the component's functionality, ignoring several important factors. First, the temperature in the freezer you're using for testing should be no higher than -12 degrees Celsius, preferably -15 degrees Celsius. If your freezer reaches this temperature and the sensor contacts don't close, you can assume the sensor is faulty. However, even after you've confirmed that the contacts are closed, don't relax, as a seemingly functional part can malfunction after being installed in the refrigerator. The reasons for this behavior are difficult to explain, so I won't dwell on them.
Touch sensors. Things are a little simpler here. Unlike thermostat sensors, this component changes resistance when exposed to the environment. To check, measure the resistance at several temperature levels. If it changes and remains within the manufacturer's specified tolerances, the sensor is likely intact. However, there's a catch here, as in the first case: a seemingly functional sensor can malfunction when installed on a refrigerator. Generally, it's best to test it by replacing it.
