Join us for a panel discussion about “Careers In Audio” featuring industry veterans John Krivit, moderator (Educator/Hey Audio Student) and panelists Jenna Emens (Post Production Mixer), Zoe Thrall (Studio Manager) and Jim Julian (Design Engineer). They will be sharing their experiences with us as we explore a variety of career options in audio. We are hoping this panel will inspire all with some interesting options for different or new pathways to a career in audio.
John Krivit is a Past President of the Audio Engineering Society. He was the Chair of the AES Education Committee from 2010 to 2015 and again starting in 2020 where he has built a vibrant global community of educators, students and institutions. John is a senior affiliated faculty at Emerson College. His work as an educator has been defined by an unrelenting passion for connecting his students to gainful and rewarding careers in all facets of the audio industry. He is the recipient of the Inabeth Miller Award for excellence in teaching and the Norm Prescott Award for outstanding faculty member. John led the 2018 AES Conference on Audio Archiving, Preservation & Restoration at the US Library of Congress as its chair and also chaired the 2018 and 2019 AES High School Audio Educators Conferences. Currently, he is a consultant for several manufacturers of audio technology. John chronicles the events and opportunities available to audio students of all ages through his popular Hey Audio Student Facebook group. He continues to speak at audio events around the world.
Zoe Thrall is a music industry professional with decades of experience in recording studio management.
Her career started at the famed Power Station Studios in New York City where she learned both sides of studio operations as both an assistant engineer and in studio management. There she met producer/musician/actor Little Steven Van Zandt who hired her to work for him as an engineer and as a musician in his band Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul.
She later returned to Power Station to become their studio manager and eventually President of the company. Her career continued on to become manager of Hit Factory Studios in New York City, overseeing 9 studios and 75 employees.
In 2005 the Palms Casino Resort courted her to Las Vegas to build and operate the Studio at the Palms where she worked for 15 years. She is now the Director of Studio Operations of The Hideout Recording Studios in Henderson, Nevada.
Jenna Emens is a New York City post production mixer/sound designer for 22 years and a voice over actor for over 13 years. A three time Emmy Award winning Sound Designer and Mixer for Film & Television, she is presently the head audio mixer for NYC Media/MOME Channel 25/22
Jenna is an Emmy Award winning Voice Over Actor, on-air radio personality on 91.5 WNYE-FM in NYC and an Audio Sound Designer / Mixer for over 18 years and has worked on both sides of the vocal booth, recording and being recorded. Knowing both sides has helped her understand what the producers really want out of a voice over session from an actor. Jenna currently owns a professional post production Pro Tools Suite in Brooklyn, N.Y. Full-service production capabilities Voice Over recording / editing / mixing ready for Broadcast.
Jim Julian is an "engineer with a creative side." He is an accomplished design engineer and business-owner, with expertise in both product and service industries. With a lifelong involvement in electronics, Jim held his first part-time job as a self-taught electronics technician while in high school. He continued as a 'tech' until he graduated from the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a BSEE degree, immediately becoming a design engineer. A lifelong learner, he is currently enrolled in NJIT's MSEE program.
Jim owns the consulting and design firm Jim Julian Unlimited, LLC, leveraging decades of industry experience ranging from data communications to medical devices. He is a senior member of the IEEE and has been an AES and IEEE member for 40+ years. Jim is currently developing a line of audio/video products to be released in 2021.
Creatively, Jim is a writer, musician, and photographer, showing his fine-art photographs in regional area events. Jim Julian Photography is his trade name for commercial photo, video, and voiceover work. He is a drummer and a singer and has performed publicly in local bands.
