Minus 25°, Cracking Ice… and I Still Stayed

This was one of the coldest days I’ve ever spent on the ice.

With a -25 polar vortex rolling through the Great Lakes region, I ice fished Fishmasters Marina on the Grand River, starting inside the marina before moving out into the main river current. Between the extreme cold, constant ice cracking, and brutal conditions, this turned into more of a grind and learning experience than a catching day.

In this video I cover:

-Ice fishing a marina vs the main river

-Spot selection on the Grand River in extreme cold

-Why I limited movement during a polar vortex

-The two rod setup I ran all day

-What the sonar was (and wasn’t) showing

How conditions like this can completely shut a bite down

No fish landed, but this is the reality of ice fishing rivers and marinas during a polar vortex. If you fish the Grand River, Great Lakes tributaries, or similar systems, this day will probably feel very familiar.

If you enjoy honest fishing trips, tough conditions, and learning from days that don’t go to plan, consider subscribing. More ice fishing videos coming as conditions improve.
