11:00-11:15 am The Spark of Learning: Connecting a Faculty Learning Community with Our Library Collection
See how a Penn State York Faculty Learning Community (FLC) engaged campus faculty in a critical discussion of The Spark of Learning: Energizing the College Classroom with the Science of Emotion and used the text to explore the development of a new library collection. The Spark collection at the Penn State York library is designed to drive student curiosity by using faculty expertise to identify the core concepts, new concepts, big ideas, and driving questions in each discipline. FLCs are a faculty-led and faculty-driven initiative of Teaching and Learning with Technology.
11:15-11:30 am Using and Creating OER: Tools and Tips You Can Leverage Today!
Over the past few years, Penn State has made a major commitment to transforming education and enhancing access to it by exploring and investing in open educational resources (OER). This session, led by the co-chairs of Penn State's Open & Affordable Educational Resources Working Group, will identify and demonstrate easy tools and practical tips that any faculty member, instructional designer, or OER advocate can use to start transforming their own practices and courses.
11:30-11:45 am Online Students Need Library Instruction: Make it a Reality
This session will cover topics such as library instruction, information literacy, and the research process. It can be hard to see how adding library instructional opportunities into online courses fits in with your existing course design and curriculum. This presentation will examine practical examples of how educational technology tools create robust learning experiences for students. It will also provide attendees with a toolkit to think about how to include the library as an instructional partner to improve student learning outcomes. After attending this session, attendees will be able to identify the opportunities for library instruction integrations.
11:45 am-12:00 pm Affordable Course Content: Adopting and Adapting OER at Penn State
Helping instructors learn more about Open Educational Resources (OER), one grant at a time is how the Affordable Course Content Faculty Fellowship (ACCFF) at Penn State Abington was started in 2019. Funded by a campus-specific Chancellor’s grant, this adoption fellowship provides faculty recipients with the support and funding necessary to adopt open or low-cost course materials. Members of the ACCFF receive a stipend to fund their exploration and adoption of OER, as well as the necessary restructuring of their courses’ syllabi and online management system that follows. A team of librarians and instructional designers work with them to assist in locating, evaluating, organizing, and modifying OER for each of their individual course’s needs. In this presentation, survey results will be shared to show how faculty and students engaged with and accessed OER within the project – as well as more details about the philosophy and structure of the ACCFF, how we marketed the project to faculty, the lessons learned along the way, and plans for the future.
