Coronavirus, 2021 | Why it is deadly?
This is a video that shares my opinion on why the coronavirus is deadly, especially with these new variants, it is also just a sort of a reminder on why we should not become complacent in our fight against this virus. The Corona virus or Sar-Cov-2 as it is called, has special proteins on its surface that are called spike proteins that are able to bind to the Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) receptor of the type II pneumocyte cells of the alveoli. Once bound, the virus releases its viral RNA into the cell and starts replicating and causes various pathogenic symptoms such as fever, hypoxia, breathlessness, coughing, pneumonia like- symptoms and so on that are associated with covid-19 symptoms. These symptoms are appearing because our immunity is trying to fight against the virus, macrophages release cytokines such as Interleukin 1 and 6, as well as a Tumour necrosis factor alpha, causing inflammation and attracting Neutrophils to the site of infection to help fight against the viruses, and if our immunity fails then the covid19 disease becomes fatal.
This is why a vaccine is needed to help equipped our immune system with the necessary information to neutralise the virus.
