Just like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, a "Hierarchy of Work-Focus" is a good way to visualize the full picture of work productivity and fulfillment. At the base of the pyramid are the sudden emergencies and crises that come up, followed by the commitments of emails, meetings, and so on, along with the general heavy workload of the day. For many people, these obligations are the totality of their focus on a usual day; they do not feel able to rise above these obligations to get a picture of their farther-reaching goals and strategic vision. This is called The Burden of Restraint; and it is an obstacle that takes new skills and new techniques of resource management to overcome.
