The confrontation between Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek, the Chinese Civil War.
This isn't just a Chinese issue.
The Korean War broke out immediately after Mao Zedong's Chinese Communist Party took over the mainland.
And it continues to influence the fate of Korea as of 2024.
Until April 1949, Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang occupied a much larger territory than Mao Zedong's Chinese Communist Party.
And the Yangtze River, China's longest river, served as a natural barrier.
It was unclear how long it would take Mao Zedong's Liberation Army to overcome this barrier.
However, Mao Zedong's Liberation Army crossed the Yangtze River in just a few days,
and drove Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang forces from the entire Chinese mainland.
From the beginning, Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang forces were invincible, no matter what they did.
What was the reason for this shocking situation?
Chiang Kai-shek, driven to Taiwan,
ordered the establishment of a defensive posture on Kinmen Island, a small island off the coast of Tai'an.
And at around 1:30 a.m. on October 25, 1949,
Mao Zedong's People's Liberation Army launched a full-scale assault on Kinmen Island with 300 wooden boats.
This was the final decisive battle of the Chinese Civil War, with the fate of Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang government at stake.
How did the Kuomintang soldiers, who had suffered successive defeats, fend off this attack?
