One of Prince Harry's friends has revealed what he is truly like behind the scenes and how he behaves at home with his wife, Meghan Markle. This friend describes Prince Harry as "kind, funny, and pretty normal." She also praised his ability to connect with people across the world. As Harry approaches his 40th birthday on Sunday, British journalist Bryony Gordon, who has known him since 2016, shared insights into the couple's private life.
Ms. Gordon wrote for the Mail, explaining that she has been in contact with Harry since the launch of the Heads Together campaign in May 2016. This campaign, led by Prince Harry and the Prince and Princess of Wales, was a royal initiative to end the stigma around mental health. Since then, she has met with Harry many times and now considers both him and Meghan to be her friends.
She reflected on her friendship with Harry, saying: "Eight years ago, I became friends with Prince Harry, and ever since, people have been curious about his character: has he been brainwashed, is he trying to bring down the monarchy, is he just after money, and so on." She continued, "I've heard a lot of negative things said about him—character attacks that don't match the man I've come to know. He's someone who cares deeply about injured veterans and has done more than most to change perceptions of mental health in this country."
Ms. Gordon also shared what the Sussexes are like at home, recalling a visit to their Montecito home just before the release of Harry's memoir, Spare. She described them as "a pretty ordinary couple living in an extraordinary situation." She spent an afternoon at their house, where the kids were happily playing, and she and the couple shared tea. Harry proudly showed her a photo wall he’d recently created himself, featuring pictures of his mother.
When she left, they gave her a jar of their homemade jam, which she accidentally left in a taxi due to jet lag. She was reminded that they are just like any other couple, trying to live a normal life despite their unique circumstances. She added, "They don't put on any airs and graces. They simply want to protect their children from a digital world that often focuses on the worst in people."
Ms. Gordon concluded, "This might not be what people want to hear, but it's what I've found time and time again. So, happy 40th birthday, Haz. May you continue to make a difference for the next 40 years, regardless of the critics."
