Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation's torpedo bomber Avenger. This is the aircraft that former President George H.W. Bush flew, and was shot down in during WWII during a bombing raid on Chichi Jima.
This Lindberg-Models version was a gift from a friend and it was a joy to build and paint. With active turret, control surfaces, landing gear, arresting hook, and bomb bay doors. Even the pedals and stick in the cockpit move.
Powered by a Wright R-2600-8 "Double Cyclone" air-cooled radial piston engine reaching 1700 hp and a speed of 271 mph. The Avenger was the Navy's heavy lifter, as the heaviest single-engine aircraft of World War II.
The ordinance carried by this model includes a Mk-13 torpedo and two depth bombs in the bomb bay, as well as eight 5" unguided missiles under the wings.
The Avenger was manned by a crew of three: Pilot, turret gunner, and radioman/bombardier/ventral gunner.
