In this Still life oil painting lesson I Paint a pear standing upright to create some tension in the composition
, I found it funny that it reminded me of my favorite shape; The Pear shaped women body ;)
In this Oil painting study, I start out not with a new canvas but with a canvas that I already sketched a pear on. The original pear is long gone to the eternal hunting grounds so I found a new one that I sketch over the first rough sketch.

I do keep this painting a little sketchy and it is more a rough painting study of shape then a photographic rendition of it. in the video I also show you how to glaze, how to use Retouching Varnish, How to Paint shapes and textures with Brushwork and How to Paint Shadows and Details
I also used the brushwork to follow the shape of the Pear so that the directions of the brushstrokes built the shape of the Pear the good thing about old Holland oil colors is that they are thick as clay and can be shaped and overpainted without becoming a mess. I use red yellow and blue as a basis and work from there. I also do creative choices with brushwork in the back and for ground to create depth and a feeling of motion. Painting still life’s is one of the best ways to learn how to paint and train the eyes to see shapes and colors.
The most important thing for me is the creative process and flow that I get in to while painting. I joke with there being a “closet” impressionist with in me and I have been called a colorist.
I do not hold back when I add colors, a thing that sometimes makes me unsure and to subjective to judge my own art work, but I take my chances Best Knut Andre Vikshåland I am a Norwegian artist and painter that creates YouTube videos about how to make oil painting.
On this YouTube channel, I manly focus on oil paint and how to use brushes, oil painting medium, oil colors, how to mix oil paint, how to use the palette :) In this oil painting tutorial, I show you how to build textures and use brushes to create different property’s in different objects like red onion and how to create the evolution of physical room by the use of oil colors and how I sketch with oil colors directly on the canvas. I do use a more impressionist painting technique in this oil painting but in Principe it is the same painting process it only depends how deep one go in to detail. In this painting, I choose to keep it more open and rougher.
Painting still life’s is one of the most important things when it comes to evolve as a painter and I highly recommend it, remember still life’s is not going anywhere and are your free model, it is also great training in understanding rom and to train the brain in seeing depth colors and textures IF YOU
