"Root beer" really has very little to do with either roots or beer.
Root beer is non-alcoholic. Only the foam, created by the controversial ingredient kujaja extract, is reminiscent of beer. It suggests that something has been brewed—just like the barrels depicted on the cans.
Originally, the soft drink was made from the sassafras root. This has since been replaced with flavorings, as it is considered highly carcinogenic. Furthermore, root beer contains primarily one ingredient: sugar. Surprise! After all, one of these drinks contains 13.4 grams of sugar. That's more sugar than in cola and almost twice as much as in an apple spritzer.
So, "root beer" is quite a far cry from its traditional origins.
