Jülich - Jewish Shops in Jülich
Since the 19th century, about 5 % of the shops have been run by Jewish merchants. Especially in the textile and meat trade, there were several shops that had been based in Jülich for at least two generations. Many were successful, offering up-to-date assortments in modern stores. When the National Socialists came to power in Jülich, they lost their clientele through denigration, slander and threats. After the pogrom on 9 November 1938 at the latest, it became clear to many that they no longer had a future in Jülich and sold their businesses, mostly below value. Those who could not escape in time were killed in the Konzentrationslager in the east.
