Between the wars, large parts of the population had to suffer in several economic crises. Immediately after the First World War, the cities had to facilitate trade with their own money. In 1923, unemployment and inflation led to great poverty and new government employment programs. Even in the economic crisis from 1929 onwards, the number of unemployed and welfare recipients rose sharply. With funds from the Reich Labour Service, major municipal tasks could be carried out, but the discontent of the population led to the strengthening of the radical political parties – until they were taken over by the National Socialists.
