The Jülich Börde is a very fertile land for cereals and sugar beets. Since 1880, the Jülich sugar factory has been a major employer. The Jülich paper mills were also modernised and enlarged after the First World War. From 1918 onwards, the workshop of the Deutsche Reichsbahn for the repair of locomotives and wagons became the largest employer. New apartments had to be built for the up to 2,000 employees. For this purpose, a new district "Heckfeld" was planned and developed in Jülich. Many commercial transactions and administrations provided modern workplaces.
