With the eight-hour day, many had more free time and wanted to do sports. The occupation of Jülich did not allow the joint use of the sports facilities. For this reason, the city of Jülich acquired the old Napoleonic fortress on the left bank of the Rurufer. Walking paths, animal enclosures and gardens have been created here. A new outdoor swimming pool and sports facilities for football, athletics, tennis and cycling were built with the help of the programs for the unemployed. The Nazis used the site for the construction of a large "Thingstätte", an event venue with a huge stage and grandstands for more than 20,000 spectators. This leisure area was restored after the Second World War.
