Just shy of being 30 years old, 'Rubberband Girl' was a 1993 release from the inimitable Kate Bush, who had burst onto the music scene 15 years earlier with the seminal 'Wuthering Heights' and her debut long player 'The Kick Inside'. There is no-one quite like Kate Bush - she has always marched to the beat of her own drum and 'Rubberband Girl' is illustrative of that. Here, I have the extended remix from the CD Single which was a minor hit here in Australia and in New Zealand. In her homeland, British Kate Bush, managed a #12 with it, and it pre-empted the release of her 7th studio album 'The Red Shoes' late in 1993. Kate's discography is uneven and inconsistent, but filled with absolute classics like 'Hammer Horror', 'Man With the Child In His Eyes', 'Running Up That Hill' and Babooshka' which reached #,2 here. For me, she is the epitome of a boutique music artist - someone who pleases herself and her fans far more than the critics or the industry or even her record labels, but in so doing has carved out a career that sees her definitely swimming in her own lane.

With two dozen chart placings in Britain and a strong following downunder, Kate Bush's unique style did not really appeal to the holy grail - America, but in her career she did achieve 3 Grammy nominations. It still amazes me that when she was just 19 she released her debut album, and she has paved the way for so many other female artists - in part as 'Wuthering Heights' was the first song to reach #1 by a woman in Britain with her own composition. Just one of many records that Catherine Bush; CBE (The Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire) has set in her long career.
