Hi there and welcome to my channel. In today's lesson, we're going to be talking about personal grooming, so let's dive in!
So, what is personal grooming? Well, basically it's all about personal hygiene, taking care of yourself, washing, cleaning. Now, one of the most common doubts my students often had, is the difference between American and British English. So, in British English, we have a shower -that is what we say, have a shower. Whereas in American English you will probably hear take a shower. Or have a bath in British English, or take a bath in American English.
Alternatively, you could say "Well, I'm going to soak in the bath", which means to lie down and relax with bubbles and hot water. Of course, you can also say "I'm going to have a shower". Or, if you want to show that it's quick or just very brief -a couple of minutes, you can say: "I'm going to jump into or hop into the shower". Now, if we have to wash another person -like in my case, my baby daughter, we say: "I'll give the baby a bath" or "I'm going to give the baby a shower".
Also, most of us use shower gel or shampoo. We don't usually use the word soap. First, what we do in the shower is: we lather up -means that we put the gel in our hands and make it bubbly, and we make it into a foam. Then, of course, we rub the shower gel or shampoo in our hair, or all over our body, then we rinse off the shower gel, and then we get dry or we dry ourselves.
Now, when it comes to hair, we say: "I'm going to brush my hair, do my hair or style my hair", which you do either with a comb or a brush. Now, if you have wavy or curly hair, then sometimes you want to use a hair iron or straightener to straighten your hair. And if you have long hair, you can put it up in a ponytail, bob, tress or braids, or you can simply wear your hair down.
The most common hair types are straight, wavy and curly. Again, if you have enough hair or long hair, you can hold your hair in place with a hairpin, hair clips, hair band, hair tie or a scrunchie. A very important point here, if we talk about going to the hairdresser, we don't cut our hair at the hairdresser's, but we have our hair cut.
Moving on to teeth, what we do is: we brush our teeth with toothpaste, using a toothbrush. We can also use dental floss to clean the spaces between our teeth, because sometimes we get little bits of food or herbs stuck between our teeth.
And now, when it comes to the skin or our skin, when we want to moisturize our skin, we use moisturizer for the body. In general, we use body milk and face cream for our face. To be more precise, we rub cream on our face and we clean our face with a cleanser, or a face scrub, or we can use a peeling cream or a facial scrub.
As for deodorant, we wear it, spray it on, or roll it on.
I've hope you found this video useful and thank you very much for watching. See you next time.
