Hi everyone and welcome to my channel.
In today's lesson we're going to be talking about the most common problems car owners usually face: breakdowns and accidents.
The most common problem is that the car won't start -a flat battery, in which case, the mechanic will have to jump start it with special leads called "jump leads". Some useful phrases are: "My car won't start, because I left the lights on"; "The mechanic came and started the car" or "He got the car started"; "I need to have the battery replaced", "I think the battery is connected".
Another common problem is punctures. Changing a tyre is easy, but sometimes the bolts are too tight or rusty and you need a lot of strength or a special spanner. The mechanic raises the car with a jack and loosens the wheel bolts or nuts. They then put the spare tire on. If the wheel only has a small hole in it -for example from a nail being driven into it, the mechanic can use a repair kit; But if it's any bigger or the tyre has a slash, a new tyre must be fitted.
It's important to know the difference between wheel and tire. The tyre is the rubber and the wheel is both the rubber and rim.
So here are some more useful phrases: "My car has stalled and smoke is coming out the engine"; "My car has overheated and is leaking"; "I hit a stone and the radiator broke"; "A lot of white smoke is coming out of the exhaust", "I think the engine is burning oil"; "My engine has run out of oil, can you tell me which one to buy?"; "I'm out of coolant and the steering is stiff"; "I can't get into gear".
"My car is automatic and has locked up"; "My car is not breaking properly", "My brake pedal is spongy", "My car is jerking, I think the clutch has gone"; "The gears won't engage and it smells of burning".
So that's all for today's lesson. I hope you've enjoyed this video and found it useful, please don't forget to subscribe and see you next time. Bye!
