Hi there! I'm Simon and welcome to English Snackables. I'll be publishing videos on a regular basis showing you how to talk naturally and confidently in English for everyday situations in life. You won't find this kind of English in dictionaries or at school. This very first video lesson is all about how to say hello and goodbye in real English, so let's dive in!

So everyone can say hello and goodbye, but there are so many ways to do it while sounding natural and native. So imagine you come across a friend, in the street for example. Because it's a casual situation, you can say something like 'Hi!' or 'Hiya!', 'Hey!', 'Hi there!' or even 'What's up?'. This means 'What's new?' or simply 'How's it going?'. If you want to be a bit witty, you can always say something like 'Greetings!'. You might hear people say 'Wotcha!', but bear in mind that it's a bit dated. I used to say it when I was little.

Now let's have a look at different ways to say goodbye. A lot of people just say 'Bye!', 'Bye bye!', which is fine, but you can also say other things like 'See ya!', 'See you later!', 'I'll catch you later!'. So these are quite informal. You could also say 'Laters!' which is more slang.

Just a word of warning: in textbooks you might have seen things like 'Tata!' or 'Cheerio!', but they're really old-fashioned. If you want to say goodbye to an older person - someone you're not on familiar terms with- or you just want to show respect, you can say 'So long!'.

Natives often add short phrases to their goodbyes, sometimes to show they care. An example of these are 'Mind how you go!', 'Take care!' or 'God bless!'.

So that's all for today. Thank you for watching and to keep track of more useful English for everyday situations, don't forget to subscribe to this channel. So I hope you've enjoyed this video and please give me a thumbs up. It comes in handy and it really helps. Bye!
