Hi there, welcome to my channel. Today, I'll be talking about something you most certainly have at home: plants. If you manage to put the vocabulary and expressions from this video into practice, then you'll be talking about caring for plants like a native. So let's dive in!
And now, nothing brightens up your home like a few potted plants. To keep them healthy and vigorous, you need to know whether to put them in the sun, shade or a place where there is both sunlight and shade throughout the day. Here are some useful phrases: "Put the plant in the sunlight", "Keep mint away from direct sunlight or it will scorch", "Daisies need a lot of sunlight", "These potted plants need both sunlight and shade", "Begonias need shade".
Now, when it comes to the type of plants, the most typical are indoor or house plants, and outdoor ones. If you're lucky enough to have a garden or terrace, you might be able to plant in flower beds in direct contact with the soil. Plants take root easily and nourish themselves better. Here are some phrases: "Have you planted the tulip bulbs yet?". "The roots of this pine tree are pushing up the soil on the terrace", "Plants take in water through their roots". House plants need to be transplanted when the plant has outgrown the pot. You'll have to add more soil from time to time, so that the plant can flower, It's also a good idea to prune every now and then. Here are some more useful phrases for you: "I'm going to buy a larger pot for the petunias", "Ferns are fast growing", "I need a pot with a hole in the bottom to drain the water", "Yesterday I cut the stems off the plant", "I've bought a kilo bag of soil", "When we prune a plant, the sap allows the wound to close".
Now, it's important to water plants properly. Too much will cause the roots to rot, and too little will wilt the plants. Here are some more phrases: "This plant has rotten roots", "Don't water so much", "The geranium is drying out", "The rose bush is withered, all its leaves have fallen off". It's a good idea to water with mineral water.
And now, the parts of a plant. We have the flowers, roots, stem, leaves, seeds, thorns, and pits -or, depending on the type of plant or fruit, kernels. Here are some more useful phrases: "Daisies bloom in winter", "Pruned or cut or trimmed flowers wither quickly", "The roots of that tree are poking out of the ground", "The geranium has some yellow leaves", "It's important to remove the dry leaves", "The stems of the roses are full of thorns", "These seeds should be planted one centimeter deep", "If you plant an apricot kernel, a tree will grow".
Finally, I hope you're not allergic to pollen and can enjoy this physio without sneezing. Here are some useful phrases to end with: "In spring, banana trees give off microscopic pollen", "The air is full of pollen" or "There is a high pollen count", "I get a terrible hay fever in spring", "Pollen gets right up your nose".
Thanks for tuning in and listening. I hope you found this video useful and see you next time. Bye!
