Hi everyone! I'm Simon and over the years I've seen the difficulties many of my students have finding real English expressions in grammar books, dictionaries and even in their course books. In this channel I'm going to teach you how to use English properly and confidently for everyday situations. Today we're going to take a tour of your kitchen. Let's dive in!

In many homes the kitchen is the hive of activity and it's important to master some basic phrases. If an English friend asks you about the layout of your kitchen, you might say that it is L-shaped, very small, light, dark or roomy. I hope you never have to say it's dirty, sticky, or it's a real mess. So, where to cook? You might have a ceramic hob or a gas stove. Let's have a look at some useful phrases. So "I turn on the ceramic hob, because it's electric", but "I light the stove". Likewise, "I turn down the heat of the ceramic hob", but "I turn the flame down or off". When the food is cooked, I turn off the hob or turn the oven off. We also say "Put the food on the stove" and "Take the food off the stove, or off the heat".

And where to prep the ingredients? Well, on the countertop, which is usually made of stoneware or resin or even granite. To protect this surface from scratches you could use a chopping board. Once you've finished, you can put it back in its place, for example, in a cupboard or on a shelf. Rubbish, on the other hand, is thrown away, not kept. In another tutorial I talk about the different utensils and verbs for preparing food. The link is at the top of this video.

In a typical kitchen there are appliances such as a fridge, freezer or both in one a microwave, oven, toaster which I broke the other day a sandwich maker, a coffee maker and a kettle, all of which are plugged into sockets. If an appliance is big and bulky we call it a contraption. So, when it comes to cleaning, we wash the dishes in the sink and dry them on the drying or draining rack. We wipe the countertops and wall tiles with a cloth, and sweep and mop the floor tiles.

That's all for now. If you found this video useful and you've enjoyed it, then please give me a thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe to my channel, so you can keep your English up to date for everyday situations. It's really handy. Bye!
