Jeroen Tel's rendition of the main theme (Wilderness) for Golden Axe on the Commodore 64. See more of my classic game video music playlist    • Classic video game music

Golden Axe is a side-scrolling hack and slasher that was inspired by both the Conan the Barbarian films and Double Dragon games. It was developed by Sega, hitting the arcades in spring 1989 and the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis later that year. Subsequent ports for a variety of home computers, including the Atari ST, Commodore 64 and Amiga, were released in 1990.

Although my favourite version of Golden Axe is probably either the arcade machine or Mega Drive, I do have soft spot for the C64 port because of Jeroen Tel's brilliant take on Tohru Nakabayashi's original soundtrack. I love the extended Wilderness track and how he incorporates the Death Adder theme as an intro. He also masterfully squeezes a lot out of the SID chip's three audio channels.

The SID file for this track was sourced from the High Voltage SID Collection (HSCV) at https://www.hvsc.c64.org/
