Lemmings is an action puzzler developed by DMA Design and published by Psygnosis in 1991 for the Amiga. The music is by Tim Wright and Brian Johnston.
The game tasks you a group of up to 100 gormless lemmings through dangerous and highly-destructible 2D landscapes. Without intervention, they’ll cheerfully march in the same direction until they either perish (usually by plummeting en masse) or are forced to turn back around. However, you can help them overcome obstacles by assigning individual lemmings with special abilities, such as climbing, building, digging, blocking and, everyone's favourite, exploding.
Lemmings was a phenomenally successful game and after its Amiga release was ported to virtually every platform that existed at the time, including the humble ZX Spectrum! It is estimated to have a sold an incredible 15-20 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games of all time. Of course, developer DMA Design (known as Rockstar North these days) would go on to enjoy even greater success with the Grand Theft Auto series.
